Max Holloway will fight Dustin Poirier at UFC 236 for the Interim lightweight title, and presumably, the winner will fight Khabib Nurmagomedov in Novemeber upon his return from suspension.
According to Dana White, Tony Ferguson was offered a chance to fight for the Interim belt (again) and Ferguson denied the opportunity. “El Cucuy” is riding an 11 fight win steak and is coming off an exciting back and forth win over former lightweight champion Anthony Pettis at UFC 229.
Nurmagomedov took to Instagram to send a message to Tony:
“As a fighter you deserve a title fight, you are great fighter and opponent, but now you have to fight or wait for my DQ to be over and fight (but UFC doesn’t want it.) I don’t understand your offenses, if you fell down, you got to get up, not complain.”
With rumors of Conor vs Cowboy in July, we are now officially in a “log jam” at 155. Realistically, the winner of the Interim title bout between Max and Poirier will face Khabib when he returns in November. If Conor defeats Cowboy in July, the UFC is looking at potentially the largest PPV in the history of the sport by putting on that rematch with Nurmagomedov.
Tony will be forced to take another fight in the mean time, with the only logical opponent being Al Iaquinta, who is coming off of a unanimous decision win over Kevin Lee in December.
